I’m single and proud of it. Of course, I’ve had plenty of relationships in the past and I have a mad crush or two at the moment, but overall the single life rocks. It always surprises me to hear how desperate some girls are to find a boyfriend. Some of them don’t even care who so long as they have someone to hold hands with in the halls or write sappy notes to during math. If you actually like your boyfriend, I wish you great joy and happiness, but if you aren’t content - come on back to the single life!

I Can Make My Own Plans

I have a huge network of friends, as do most single girls. My core group of girly-friends might get together at the spur of the moment and I’m always ready for a good time. I don’t have an obligation to spend time with a guy who just wants to play Xbox. I’m ready and willing to make plans with just about anyone for anything. Want to take a road trip? Bring it on! Want to go on a date? If you’re cute and my kind of guy, why not? Want to watch cry movies? Let’s do it. No obligations – total freedom.

I Don’t Have to Shave My Legs

Of course I shave them before any little hairs are visible (gross!) but I don’t have to shave them every single day to be sure that they are “touchable.” I don’t let strangers touch my legs, and some of my boyfriends have never earned the privilege of offering me a foot massage, but when you’re with someone special, I always feel the need to have the legs shaved up in case he rests his hand on my knee or rubs my ankle while we’re laying around watching TV. That’s a lot of shaving to keep up with every day!

I Can Watch Whatever I Want

Sharing love with someone usually involves sharing the television, too. I’m not always down with that. I like to choose which game I play, and I like to choose what shows I watch. I don’t want to record my show so that we can watch something HE wants. I’m the girl, I have priorities, and there is a whole new series of Heroes coming on. Guys just complicate my television viewing.

I Can Enjoy Crushes

I love to like someone. I love that feeling of thrills and tingles when you see him looking at you or think you might have made eye contact meaningfully. The flirting, the wondering, the navigation through murky “relationship” waters are all great fun. Most of all I just love to have a crush on someone and wonder anxiously if he likes me back. When I’m with a boyfriend, I can still have little crushes on anyone I want, but I have to feel a bit guilty about it. (It’s only cheating to act on the crushes; it’s natural to find other people attractive.) Freedom means secret romances can play out in my head with absolutely no guilt at all!
